Description

Food historian and award-winning author Peter Rose gives us an enlightening sampling of historical Dutch recipes adapted for the modern kitchen. From cookies and custards to savory dishes and salads, Rose shows that historical cooking-whether done over an open fire or on a stovetop-need not be a thing of the past. Rose includes an engaging overview of Dutch culinary history from the middle ages to the seventeenth century, giving readers a tour of the foodways of the Netherlands and New Netherland.

About the Author
Peter G. Rose is the author of The Sensible Cook: Dutch Foodways in the Old and New World and coauthor with Donna R. Barnes of Matters of Taste: Food and Drink in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Art and Life and Childhood Pleasures: Dutch Children in the Seventeenth Century.

Reviews
This extremely informative book offers historical insight into the Dutch culinary heritage in America, together with recipes, to give us an enticing taste of the past. Thank you, Peter Rose, for another great publication on our shared culinary traditions! 'You are what you eat' may be a cliche but it does embody the most important activity central to life: the preparation and consumption of food. Rose's engaging book celebrates this activity among the Dutch settlers in the Hudson Valley with 72 historical recipes, a highly informative essay on Dutch foodways of the period, and instructions on how to cook the dishes in a home fireplace.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
