Reviews
'Uncrowned is an epic debut from Ashley Mantle. A tour de force that breathes life into those might have been kings and queens had fate dealt them a different hand. The people within aren't just what-ifs to tantalise, but fully fleshed people with stories of their own bursting to get out. They may have lacked a crown, but Mantle shows that none lacked a character of their own.' -- Matthew Lewis, author of Richard III: Loyalty Binds Me
'I enjoyed reading 'Uncrowned' and recommend it to anyone who, like me, somehow missed most of this at school and have been trying to make sense of history ever since.' -- The Writing Desk, November 2023
'This entertaining and intriguing book is very accessible and should appeal to a casual reader of history who is looking to find out more about this particular category of royals. They are guaranteed to find something to capture their attention.' -- All About History Magazine, December 2023
'I must say that this task of combining over a thousand years of royal history into a comprehensive book is no easy task, but Mantle does a spectacular job. It was an informative and engaging read that would be perfect for any fan of royal history. If you want a fascinating book about those who were so close to the throne but never ruled, I highly suggest you read, "Uncrowned: Royal Heirs Who Didn't Take the Throne" by Ashley Mantle.' -- Adventures of a Tudor Nerd, December 2023
'This is a book of great charm.' -- Miniature Wargames Magazine, February 2024
'All in all, an excellent book to have in my collection and one I shall read and dip into again and again.' -- The Ricardian Bulletin, March 2024
'With kings and queens barred from the throne, fleeing the country, fighting to regain the crown and many other tales, these are the stories of the monarchs who our own, more ordinary ancestors, might have discussed at the marketplace and read about in the newspapers - history truly brought to life.' -- Family Tree Magazine, April 2024
