The Laird of Rideau Hall explore la vie et l'epoque de Thomas Mackay, le principal fondateur de Bytown/Ottawa. Ne et eduque a Perth, en Ecosse, Mackay et sa famille ont emigre a Montreal en 1817. Avec son compagnon, le macon John Redpath, il a construit les ecluses du premier Canal de Lachine, a entrepris des constructions militaires a Fort Lennox et sur l'I ;le Sainte-Helene, et il a fourni la pierre pour eriger la Basilique Notre-Dame de Montreal. Engage par le Colonel By des Royal Engineers pour construire les ecluses Ottawa et Hartwell du Canal Rideau, Mackay a utilise ses profits pour fonder le village de New Edinburg et il a construit un ensemble industriel entoure d'un moulin aux Chutes Rideau, ainsi que la residence Rideau Hall, nommee ainsi par sa fille. Avec les profits substantiels qu'il a realises avec le canal - payes en pieces de huit espagnoles en argent -, Mackay a ete l'un des grands hommes d'affaires impliques dans la construction du chemin de fer Ottawa et Prescott, et le principal promoteur d'Ottawa en tant que capitale du Canada. Il a servi en tant que colonel dans le bataillon des milices de Russell et de Carleton, a ete membre de l'Assemblee legislative pour la circonscription de Russell pendant sept ans et un membre du Conseil legislatif du Canada pendant quinze ans. Apres la mort de Mackay en 1855, son beau-fils Thomas Keefer, egalement directeur de la propriete, a vendu Rideau Hall au gouvernement afin que celle-ci serve de residence au Gouverneur general du Canada. Keefer a aussi developpe un domaine appartenant a la succession qui est devenu le village de Rockcliffe Park, aujourd'hui un quartier regroupant plus de soxante-dix residences diplomatiques. The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.

Found a hard to get book…

Finding a hard to get book on Booksplease and with it not being an over inflated price was great. Ordering was really easy with updates on despatch. The book was packaged well and in great condition. I will certainly use them again.
