At the outbreak of the War of Austrian Succession in 1742, the British Army's military tactics were tired and outdated, stultified after three decades of peace. Huw J. Davies is reader in early modern military history at King's College, London. He is the author of Wellington's Wars: The Making of a Military Genius and Spying for Wellington: British Military Intelligence in the Peninsular War.
