Description

This documentary history is intended for specialist and non-specialist alike. The introductions to the book's sections, together with introductions to each document, provide a general history of the war. The contents cover the pre-war, war, and post-war periods in Cuba, Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Spain, the Philippines, and the United States. Included are documents on the main battles and diplomatic history of the war, along with internal situations in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, the Philippines, and the United States. Of particular interest is the section on Black Americans' views and participation in the war, and the section on the views of many participants, military and non-military.

Reviews
In this edited volume, historian Berner provides readers with an insightful look at the Spanish American War. He covers the pre- and postwar periods as well as the war itself in areas ranging from Guam to the Philippines, and from the US to Cuba and beyond. Readers will appreciate the varied and distinctive historical documents, which include those produced by authors ranging from presidents and generals to reporters and clergy. This volume includes often-overlooked sources, e.g., African Americans and poets, in addition to minor Spanish periodicals. Though this war is habitually ignored, its impact continues to this day. Divided into chapters with specific time frames and geographic locations, the entries in this volume are numbered and easy to follow. Examples include 'Joseph Pulitzer Demands U.S. Intervention in Cuba,' 'President William McKinley's Ultimatum to Spain,' 'Booker T. Washington Extols the Bravery of African-American Soldiers in the War,' 'Carl Sandburg Recounts His Experience at War,' and 'The Schley Court of Inquiry.' Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and general readers. * CHOICE *
The story [of the Spanish-American War] is much more complex, and this rich collection of documents provides insights into that complexity. . . .All in all, this collection for undergraduates provides history the way it should be - directly from the sources - and will be of interest to anyone intrigued by the course of the Spanish-American War. The selections are wide-ranging and appropriately introduced. * International Journal of Maritime History *
The Spanish-American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States, the result of American intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. American attacks on Spain's Pacific possessions led to involvement in the Philippine Revolution and ultimately to the Philippine - American War and the acquisition of the Philippines as an American possession. The Spanish-American War: A Documentary History with Commentaries is a 280 page compendium compiled and edited by Brad K. Berner and featuring an informative Foreword by Kalman Goldstein. Providing an historical overview of the conflict with respect to the issues that led to war from 1895 to 1898, including the ultimately failure of diplomacy (1896-1898), The Spanish-American War: A Documentary History with Commentaries is organized into chapters devoted to The War at Home; The War in Cuba; The War in the Philippines; The War in Puerto Rico. Of special note are the chapters on Negotiating the Peace (July 18--December 10, 1898) and Post-War Developments. Enhanced with a Selected Bibliography, and a comprehensive Index, The Spanish-American War: A Documentary History with Commentaries is an impressive work of detailed scholarship and a highly recommended addition to community and academic library 19th Century American History reference collections in general, and Spanish-American War supplemental reading lists in particular. * Midwest Book Review *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
