As a teenager, he would buy as many as five music newspapers a week and could chart the growth of his music knowledge by his ability to complete the crossword puzzles. In 1990, Mulligan got a job at his local record shop and spent the next twenty-five years working for all manner of music retailers. More recently, he has been a consultant for various record labels, mining their archives for overlooked gems. He has also authored several tie-in books for the successful NOW That's What I Call Music brand. Mulligan lives in north London with two cats, a patient and indulgent wife and an 'in no way too large' record collection.
