Description

The Little Eye Book: A Pupil's Guide to Understanding Ophthalmology is an easy-to-understand introduction to the field of eye care that has been updated into a new Second Edition. This book is written with the non-physician in mind, so you won't be bogged down with heavy details, yet every basic fact that you need is right here. With photographs as well as drawings and helpful tables and charts, this conversational-style text packs a big punch.

Beginning with an illustrated description of ocular anatomy, the book sweeps you into the workings of vision with hardly a blink, where you'll learn what happens when light meets the eye. But life is never perfect, and sometimes the eye isn't either. You'll get a good overview of disorders and trauma, from lids to optic nerves. The all-important red eye has a section all its own, including symptoms, signs, what's an emergency and what's not. A chapter on eye symptoms and their potential causes will help you understand patients' complaints.

New to the Second Edition:
  • A chapter on refractive errors and their correction, including a section on glasses and contact lenses
  • New technology topics including optical coherence tomography, scanning laser tomography, wavefront analysis and more
  • Updated information on medications and refractive surgery
  • Includes over 65 figures and 10 tables
Now you will finally understand how the eye works without spending hours trying to get through an overwhelming medical book. Need to know how to take a history, check vision or pupils, or give someone eye medications? It's in here! Wonder what special testing is available? We tell you! Have questions about surgery or medical treatment? Yep, we covered that, too, and more!

Written by Janice K. Ledford, an eyecare professional with over 26 years of experience, The Little Eye Book: A Pupil's Guide to Understanding Ophthalmology, Second Edition is perfect for anyone who works in the eye care industry or with patients, but isn't an ophthalmologist.

About the Author
Janice K. Ledford, COMT, who probably won't answer you unless you call her Jan, has been in the field of eye care since 1982. Through on-the-job training, self study, and wonderful mentors, she advanced through the ranks to obtain her certification as an Ophthalmic Medical Technologist in 1988. She currently works part-time at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC, and with Dr. Charles Kirby at both Biltmore Vision Center and East Side Optical, also in Asheville. The Little Eye Book, Second Edition is her 17th book for the eye care professional (all published by SLACK Incorporated). She is also the coauthor of The Crystal Clear Guide to Sight for Life (Starburst Publishers, 1996), which is written for the layperson. Journals that have published her work include Contact Lens Spectrum, Ophthalmology, Annals of Ophthalmology and Glaucoma, The Journal of Ophthalmic Nursing and Technology, Phaco and Foldables, Ophthalmology World News, and Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In 1993 she was awarded the Achievement in Ophthalmology by Alcon Surgical for coauthorship of the side approach cataract technique. Jan's writing talents are not limited to eye care or even to nonfiction. In addition to two novels, she has also published and/or won awards for her short stories and poetry. Jan lives in the mountains of western North Carolina with her two cats, Angel and Nadia. Her son Collin is a college student at Southwestern Carolina Community College in Cullowhee, NC. Her oldest son T.J. is a Master at Arms in the U.S. Navy. Daughter-in-law Kelly and the grands (Katie and A.J.) live in Georgia.

Reviews
"Anyone interested in learning more about the eye, refractive conditions, or the equipment used to diagnose and manage refractive conditions will benefit from this short book. This book is remarkably comprehensive for being so small and compact. Various diagrams and tables help readers to visualize and quickly understand the concepts. This book is a joy to read. The author makes learning about the eye fun with humor and a relaxed approach to learning. The book is easy to carry and would be great for office personnel or for those in related fields needing a working knowledge of the eye and eye care."

- Brian D. Marshall, OD, TLC The Laser Center, Doody Enterprises Inc. "I highly recommend that you take a look at The Little Eye Book...the authors have provided a clear and easy-to-read explanations of the essential aspects of eyecare, and information on eye anatomy and how the eye functions."

- Rochelle Caviness, Large Print Reviews "The Little Eye Book is highly recommended for all readers, even those with only casual interest. The book is well organized, enabling specific topics of interest to be found easily. Because of its smaller size, the book (as promised by its name) is easy to carry around and easy to use."

- Marilyn Haddrill, About.com/vision "In an age when most health care recipients are hungry for additional knowledge, this text would be an ideal adjunct."

- William N. Clarke, MD, FACS, FRCSC, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
