Description
"For too long the 9th Duke of Marlborough, the 'Builder Duke', has been hidden in the wings - a misunderstood figure, wickedly traduced in the memoirs of his first wife, Consuelo Vanderbilt. Now at last we see how he sacrificed his personal happiness to save and embellish Blenheim. The book opens with a devastating pistol shot which will astound anyone interested in those Anglo-American alliances." Hugo Vickers, Biographer of Gladys Deacon, Duchess of Marlborough

Reviews
'The authors present a rounded and understanding picture based on personal papers, photographs and the Blenheim archives. Dealing sensitively and fairly with both the Duke's marriages, they explain how he sacrificed his happiness in marrying the Vanderbilt millions in order to save Blenheim, a destiny impressed on him from early childhood, as the only way of reviving a near bankrupt family and estate. The book is also good on public life... a fascinating book, well researched and well written' Country Life
