Description

This book is an exploration of key systemic and socio-political considerations when working with people whose lives have been impacted by neurological injury and those who care for them.

Expert contributors consider the impact of intersectionality across domains that include gender, sexuality, class, education, religion and spirituality, race, culture, and ability/disability. It offers relevant literature in the field of neuropsychology as well as clinical case studies that provide inspiration and key reflections for clinicians, neurological specialist therapists, and medical staff alike. Chapters discuss navigating intersectionality in couple therapy, hidden social inequalities in paediatric neurorehabilitation, racial microaggression in inpatient settings, and more.

This book is essential for all health and social-care practitioners working in the field of brain injury and chronic illness who want to challenge the status quo and advocate for diversity and inclusion.

Reviews

"Boakye, Mwale and colleagues shine a much needed light on the current limitations and health inequalities of clinical neuropsychology in the UK serving an increasingly diverse population in terms of ethnicity and culture. With fascinating case examples, recent data on the risk of comorbidities, and illustration of practical applications in navigating intersectionality and cultural sensitivities in teamworking, technology and neurorehab, they provide a thought-provoking and inspirational guide for all clinical neuropsychologists."

Katherine Carpenter, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist; President of The British Psychological Society 2021-22

"This book adjoins the 'socio-politico-cultural' context to biopsychosocial neuropsychological formulation, adding absolutely essential understanding of the patient experience and influences on outcomes in neurorehabilitation. It seamlessly interlaces historic influences, fortitude of thought, clinical experience and case examples, the zeitgeist and events of our time to provide a necessary and humane roadmap for individual clinicians and services, which will start the moment you crack the first page of this book. In its totality it reaches all levels, from knowing thyself and humility, to organisational and institutional structures and cultures, showing what we must do and be."

Dr Gerald ('Jerry') Burgess, Director of Clinical Neuropsychology Programmes, Salomons Institute for Applied Psychology; SPANS-X author

"This is a book with enthralling lived experience case studies in clinical neuropsychology bringing Boakye and Mwale's work to life highlighting key health inequalities across UK. Having vast years of senior nursing experience in neurorehabilitation, the systemic approaches in this book encompassing a culturally diverse cohort of clients provides not only a tool but a 'stop and challenge own bias moment' for the whole multidisciplinary team. Barriers of neuropsychology are explored, and these deliberately challenge the status quo. This is a book eloquently written for everyone to read whether you want to holistically refocus on the client as a person or have insight into multicultural neuropsychology."

Dee Kapfunde, Divisional Director of Nursing & Governance, Children's, Women's, Diagnostics, Therapies, Outpatients, Pharmacy, Critical Care, St George's University Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust

"This very timely book offers a radical and creative new approach to the assessment and treatment of brain injury. It presents an alternative discourse on disability and disadvantage in neurorehabilitation, challenging us to develop culturally sensitive practices that lead to meaningful person-centred change. It draws on the growing literature on diversity and inclusion, with experts in the field offering thoughtful, compassionate and pragmatic recommendations for culturally informed assessment, formulation and intervention. This is a hopeful, inspirational and serious textbook. Experienced and trainee practitioners alike should read it."

Dr Noelle Blake, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and Teaching Fellow, University of Surrey

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
