Description
"System Dynamics Modeling and Simulation with Excel is a practical guide to understanding and managing complex, dynamic systems using a tool most professionals already know: Microsoft Excel.
The book shows how to build, test, and analyze System Dynamics models without programming. No prior knowledge of Excel or System Dynamics is assumed. Through worked examples, readers learn how feedback, accumulation, delays, and non-linear relationships drive real-world behavior over time-and why small structural changes can produce large, and often counter-intuitive, effects.
System Dynamics is used to answer three persistent questions faced by decision-makers: Where are we now? How did we get here? And where are we headed if current trends continue? The emphasis throughout is on policy exploration-using models to test interventions safely before acting in the real world.
Excel is used deliberately as a transparent modeling environment rather than a black-box simulator. Readers are taken step by step through model formulation, simulation, testing, and interpretation. Case studies are drawn from business, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and public policy, illustrating how the same underlying principles apply across domains.
By the end of the book, readers will be able to design and simulate their own System Dynamics models in Excel and use them to reason more clearly about complex problems in practice.
About the Author
Ivan W. Taylor, President and Senior Researcher of Policy Dynamics Inc., has over four decades of expertise in system dynamics, operational research, and public policy. His journey in System Dynamics traces back to 1997, when he embarked on a path dedicated to understanding the intricate dynamics of complex systems. Ivan's academic journey is equally impressive. He holds a Ph.D. in public policy and an MSc in information and systems science, which he seamlessly integrates with his practical experience to drive impactful change.
Throughout his career, Ivan has contributed significantly to the academic discourse and made tangible impacts on policy formulation and implementation. His deep understanding of complex systems dynamics enables him to navigate intricate policy landscapes with precision and insight, offering innovative solutions to pressing societal challenges.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Ivan is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of System Dynamists. Since 2019, he has dedicated himself to guiding young talents within the System Dynamics Society, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience to nurture future leaders in the field.
Moreover, Ivan has recently taken on multiple leadership roles within various organizations. Serving as the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Canada Director of Membership, he is pivotal in fostering collaboration and professional development within the systems engineering community. Furthermore, his commitment to education extends to his role as a volunteer faculty member at the School of Business at the State University of New York at Albany, where he imparts his wisdom to aspiring business leaders.
Additionally, Ivan holds an associate position at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, where he contributes his expertise to furthering socio-economic development initiatives. His collaboration with international partners underscores his commitment to global cooperation and exchanging ideas.
In addition to his academic and leadership roles, Ivan is involved in consulting projects to address pressing societal challenges. One such project involves a contract with the US Army on Suicide Prevention. Recognizing the critical importance of mental health and well-being within military populations, Ivan has lent his expertise by simulating comprehensive strategies for suicide prevention and mental health support.
Furthermore, Ivan has undertaken a significant contract with a principal infrastructure contractor in Southern Ontario. In this capacity, he spearheads developing an Indigenous Engagement and Inclusion Plan to foster meaningful partnerships and collaboration with Indigenous communities. Recognizing the importance of incorporating diverse perspectives and honoring Indigenous rights and traditions, Ivan's work underscores his dedication to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in all infrastructure development projects.
These consulting engagements demonstrate Ivan's versatility and ability to apply his expertise to various challenges, from mental health advocacy within military contexts to fostering inclusive practices in infrastructure development projects.
