Description

Palliative care has become increasingly important across the spectrum of healthcare, and with it, the need for education and training of a broad range of medical practitioners not previously associated with this field of care. Part of the Integrating Palliative Care series, this volume on surgical palliative care guides readers through the core palliative skills and knowledge needed to deliver high value care for patients with life-limiting, critical, and terminal illness under surgical care. Chapters explore the historical, philosophical, and spiritual principles of surgical palliative care, and follow the progression of the seriously ill surgical patient's journey from the pre-operative encounter, to the invasive procedure, to the post-operative setting, and on to survivorship. An overview of the future of surgical palliative care education and research rounds out the text. Surgical Palliative Care is an ideal resource for surgeons, surgical nurses, intensivists, and other practitioners who wish to learn more about integrating palliative care into the surgical field.

About the Author
Anne Mosenthal MD, FACS, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, and the Benjamin F Rush Jr. MD Endowed Chair of Surgery, at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. At the time of her appointment in 2011, Anne was one of only six women surgery chairs in the 141 medical schools in the US. A trauma surgeon most of her career, she has spent the last 25 years caring for those affected by traumatic injury in and around Newark, and advocating nationally for improvements in trauma and critical care. After graduating Cornell in 1979, Anne did research in microbiology, received her MD at Dartmouth Medical School and then completed her surgical training at the University of Massachusetts and Massachusetts General Hospital. Geoffrey P. Dunn, MD, FACS, received a BA in religion at Haverford College and his surgical training with the Harvard Surgical Service, New England Deaconess Hospital. His surgical experience included trauma, burns, pediatrics, and cancer in his country and abroad. He was Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Hamot Medical Center before working full time in the field of palliative and hospice care with Great Lakes Hospice and at Hamot Medical Center. He has previously served on the Board of Governors, American College of Surgeons and chaired its Committee on Surgical Palliative Care from 2001 through 2014.

Reviews
I would recommend this book to any surgeon so that they might recognize the opportunities that exist to provide better (palliative care-inclusive) care for their patients. And I would make it compulsory reading for every surgical trainee and also those training to be palliative care specialists, the latter because they need insight into the surgeon's position and difficulties when the referrals do come. * Roger Woodruff, IAHPC *
This unique book is unparalleled in its thorough coverage of this topic [...] Surgeons are often faced with hard decisions about the care they deliver in terminal or life-limiting situations, and this book acknowledges those issues and provides useful guidance for navigating them. * Jennifer Hrabe, MD, Doody's Reviews *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
