Reviews
'Structural dynamics is one of the central topics in all of engineering, and especially as applied to aerospace and mechanical systems. The authors have provided a sound and novel treatment of this subject. While the standard topics are well treated, the discussion of Hamilton's Principle and Lagrange's equations is particularly well done. Also, the authors introduce the concept of nonconservative forces and dynamic instability through the use of a follower force. Given the expertise and experience of the authors, it is not surprising that the inclusion of rotating systems (rotorcraft and turbomachinery) is a welcome addition, a topic too often neglected in other texts on structural dynamics. The stability of systems with periodic (in time) coefficients is nicely done, and the subject of damping is more extensively and insightfully treated than in many texts. Engineers in academe and industry will find this a useful and attractive treatment of the subject and a book they may well want to add to their library or course syllabus.' Earl Dowell, Duke University
'An authoritative overview of structural dynamics, from its fundamental principles to their application in aerospace and mechanical engineering. The book presents the material rigorously and comprehensively, including prerequisite concepts, an extensive collection of examples and problems, details on numerical methods, and advanced topics related to structural dynamics of rotating and periodic systems. It is an excellent resource for graduate students, educators, and professionals in the field.' Cristina Riso, Georgia Institute of Technology
'Professor Friedmann and his colleagues have written a must-read comprehensive book for students and engineers who want to enjoy the dynamics of flexible structures. It is the fruit of Professor Friedmann's decades of teaching and research experience. Read this book, and you will appreciate it as one of the best in the category.' Weihua Su, University of Alabama
'The authors have created an outstanding book that is highly recommended both for graduate-level instruction and as a reference text for structural dynamics researchers. I am not aware of any single reference text on structural dynamics that covers so many different important topics so thoroughly. Their approach combines the best of the classic theoretical reference texts along with modern computational approaches that are found in the commercially available analysis programs used by the aerospace industry.' John Kosmatka, University of California, San Diego
'The authors are well-known experts and active researchers in the subject area. They have provided a very thorough, comprehensive, and authoritative treatment of structural dynamics. I wish I could have had access to such an excellent book when I was a graduate student. Strongly recommend it to any students who are interested in this subject, including rotorcraft dynamics.'
