Description

Carter's Psychopathology is an accessible, engaging, and well-organized text covering the study, understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of psychological disorders. Fully integrating gender and culture in the presentation of mental disorders, and using a sensitive and inclusive language to encourage an empathic approach to psychopathology, this introductory textbook offers students a strong foundation of the socio-cultural factors influencing how we treat mental disorders. Featuring: boxes such as 'the power of words', promoting the use of respectful, empathic language, and 'the power of evidence', demonstrating that scientific evidence can answer questions about psychopathology treatments; real-world case studies and examples; 'concept checks' questions to test the student's mastery of the material covered in each section; chapter summaries listing the 'take-home' points discussed; and key terms and glossary highlighting terms that students will need to understand and become familiar with, this textbook provides a hands-on approach to the study of psychopathology.

Accessible and comprehensive, this textbook portrays the real people behind the DSM-5 criteria, the theories, and the research.

About the Author
Kenneth Carter is Charles Howard Candler Professor of Psychology and interim Dean at Oxford College of Emory University, where he teaches introductory courses in psychology as well as advanced courses in clinical psychopharmacology, research methods, and personality. Before joining the Oxford College faculty in 1994, Carter served as a senior assistant research scientist in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's prestigious Epidemic Intelligence Service, with a research focus on smoking as a risk marker for suicidal behaviors in adolescents. He has published extensively in both academic and lay publications, actively engaging in the translation of research in psychology into everyday language. His articles have been published in magazines such as Psychology Today and Women's Health, and he has appeared on programs such as CNN Tonight and NBC's Today show and hosted NBC's Mind of a Motorhead. His most recent book is Buzz!: Inside the Minds of Thrill-Seekers, Daredevils, and Adrenaline Junkies (Cambridge University Press, 2019).

Reviews
'Dr Kenneth Carter has carefully crafted an engaging, empirically rich, student-centered, and inclusive psychopathology textbook. No doubt, learners (and learning facilitators) will appreciate the clarity of explanations; the friendly, focused layout for close reading; the meaningful discussion questions for deep processing; the rich concept checks for retrieval practice; the abundance of relevant real-world examples and provocative illustrations; and the great care taken to present a highly readable, concise, and evidence-based exploration of psychological disorders in a practical, timely, and multiperspective context.' Bob DuBois, University of Tennessee, Knoxville
'Carter presents critical issues in psychopathology in a clear and organized fashion current with the DSM-5tr. He carefully attends to cultural variations and objectively navigates sensitive issues such as gender identity. His inclusion of `The Power of Words', which introduces the reader to word usage, its role in psychodiagnostics, and its importance for learning empathy, sets this text apart.' Gregory Moffatt, Point University

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
