Description

'I loved it, and I'm sure you will too' - Joe Lycett
'A captivating memoir: illuminating, witty, and tremendously moving' - Nigella Lawson
'A tender portrait of the importance of TV' - Jack Thorne

Two very gay things happened in the space of 24 hours in October 2003. Coronation Street aired its first gay kiss before the watershed. And Scott Bryan came out, aged 14, for the first time, in French class. In French.

From a very young age, Scott escaped into other worlds through the small screen. Navigating the world as a queer and neurodivergent person, TV offered both an escape and a way of better understanding himself. In the shadow of Section 28 banning promotion of LGBTQ+ issues in schools, television was crucial in breaking that enforced silence.

In Out Now, Scott looks back at the TV that made him, from the 90s to the present day, and the LGBTQ+ voices that were alternately championed and oppressed. Part memoir, part critique, the book takes us back to watershed moments in television history and evaluates the cultural and personal impact they had. Warm and witty in equal measure, Out Now looks at shows such as Queer As Folk, Desperate Housewives, Heartstopper and Heated Rivalry, and features interviews with the people behind the seminal moments - including Russell T Davies and Jonathan Harvey - that brought Scott and UK TV itself, to where they are today.

A part memoir, part nostalgic exploration of queer representation on television form the 1990s to now by TV critic Scott Bryan.

Reviews
A captivating memoir: illuminating, witty, and tremendously moving * Nigella Lawson *
A tender portrait of the importance of TV. Scott Bryan takes you inside the emotion of what TV storytelling does whilst pulling layers of his own skin off. This is a book about a complicated identity at a time of great exclusion and the way that characters dancing in front of you can help you find your own dance. * Jack Thorne *
Scott encourages us to recognise how the telly has always been there, its presence quietly and often outrageously helping us make sense of what it is to be us - sometimes long before we even realised there was an us. * Scottee *
A funny, gorgeous, nostalgia fest around the TV shows that helped outsiders feel included. Finally someone has written a book that proves the truth once and for all, it's not nature or nurture that makes us gay... It's television!!! * Jack Rooke *
An incredibly nostalgic, joyful and beautifully empathetic journey on the power of queer representation, visibility and belonging in British television. Scott's unquestionable passion for TV leaps out of the pages. * Phil Dunning *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
