Description

JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE was a monumental European presence - dramatist, impresario, novelist, essayist, scientist, administrator and extraordinarily prolific poet. This selection from his early and middle years includes the 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' (the title of which became famous a hundred years later through Dukas' well-known orchestral piece) and also highlights the dramatic element in Goethe's poetry (a speech from Faust and a monologue from an unfinished play about Prometheus). Several poems set to music by Brahms and Schubert are also featured. John Greening's ingenious translations offer refreshing new angles for those who are already familiar with Goethe's poetry and are an excellent introduction for those coming to it for the first time.

About the Author
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt in 1749 and died in Weimar in 1832. A prolific poet from an early age, he was also known as a man of letters, translator, editor and playwright and was active in public affairs as an administrator and a soldier. Goethe came to prominence with the publication of his first novella The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774. He worked on his dramatic poem, Faust, for much of his creative life and the first of its two parts is considered his masterpiece. A Bridport and Cholmondeley winner with over twenty collections, including The Silence (Carcanet, 2019) and Omniscience (Broken Sleep, 2022), John Greening has edited Grigson, Blunden, and Crichton Smith as well as anthologies on music, sheds and country houses (with Kevin Gardner: Hollow Palaces, Liverpool, 2021). His essays, Vapour Trails, appeared in 2020 and an American Selected is due next year from Baylor UP.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
