This book examines the destruction of the architectural heritage in Mosul, North Iraq, perpetrated by Islamic State between 2014 and 2017. It aims to fill a significant gap in our knowledge about these monuments, as their unfortunate fate is exacerbated by the fact that most of them have not been systematically documented or subjected to in-depth research. The first part of the book focuses on the course and circumstances of the systematic destruction of Mosul's monuments. It also provides a typological analysis of destroyed sites and looks at IS's religious propaganda material. The second part presents analyses of all destroyed architectural works, with a particular focus on the fourteen best-documented sites of outstanding value. The lost heritage is contextualized with reference to the urban and socio-historical development of Mosul from its foundation in 641 to the 15th century AD. Issues of architectural patronage and meaning, which underwent remarkable metamorphoses between the 12th and 14th centuries AD, are also discussed. The epilogue considers perspectives on the post-war reconstruction of the city.
