Description

This book examines the history and politics of modern Greece from the early nineteenth century to the present and the presence of diaspora Greeks in the United States during the same approximate period. It considers not only the main periods of modern Greek diaspora, but also surveys the main historical and political events in modern Greek history. Furthermore, this book examines the relationship between Greeks in Greece and Greeks in the United States and how this relationship affected developments in Greece and beyond the confines of Greece.

About the Author
George Kaloudis is professor of political science and history at Rivier University.

Reviews
Modern Greece and the Diaspora Greeks in the United States is a comprehensive, informative, rich, and well-researched treatment of an important subject. Not only does it provide a synoptic but inclusive examination of developments in modern Greece as they relate to migration, it also offers a detailed and readable account and analysis of the trials, tribulations, and success of the Greek diasporic community in the United States. This dual feat makes the volume useful to everyone interested in Greek and Greek-American affairs, especially those of Hellenic descent, who would not only get a deeper appreciation of the idiosyncrasies of their own community and themselves, but who would learn about the roots of their forefathers and the history of their ancestral land as well. As a first-generation immigrant myself, I feel that Kaloudis's book should adorn the library of every Hellene and philhellene. * Mediterranean Quarterly *
Employing a multidisciplinary and comparative approach and focusing on four distinctive waves of Greek migration, this book investigates the development of the relations between modern Greece and the Greek diaspora in the United States. Professor Kaloudis' work not only examines the causes of Greek migration to the United States but also the process of social, economic and political integration of Greek migrants into the American society. In doing so, Professor Kaloudis achieves the rare distinction of bridging migration and diaspora studies with migrant integration studies thereby offering a major empirical contribution to the literature associated with each of these fields of study but also to a growing body of literature focusing on their intersection. -- Yannis A. Stivachtis, Virginia Tech
This book makes an important contribution in literature of diasporic and immigration studies. It is well researched, full of fascinating historical tidbits that illuminate the sociopolitical conditions that made many twentieth century Greeks migrate to the United States. The book sews together the agony of having to leave ones' country and the constant yearning to return by telling the story of the Greek American diaspora. It is an important study not only for academics but for the lay person who would like to understand their heritage. I highly recommend it! -- Akis Kalaitzidis, University of Central Missouri

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
