Taking a thematic approach to the landscape of the Vale of York and the human activity that helped to shape it, this volume examines the largest exposure of prehistoric and Roman activity investigated archaeologically in the immediate hinterland of the city of York, illustrating the complex development of landscape in the area from the Neolithic period and, most intensively, in Iron Age, Roman and modern periods.

About the Author
Having worked for a decade in rescue archaeology, directing excavations in Tunisia and in the City of London in the 1970s and 1980s, Steve Roskams moved to the Department of Archaeology at the University of York. Although continuing to work abroad, in Algeria and Beirut, he has also undertaken the investigation of various UK sites in Devon, in Wiltshire and Iron Age and Roman landscapes and settlement on the Yorkshire Wolds. He helps to advise York City Council on archaeological matters and has co-written the Regional Research Framework for Yorkshire.
