Description

Merchant John Banister (1707-1767) of Newport, Rhode Island, wore many hats: exporter, importer, wholesaler, retailer, trader on his own account, moneylender, extender of credit and insurer, owner and outfitter of sailing vessels. His recently discovered accounting records reveal his role in transforming colonial trade in mid-18th century America. Combining business acumen and work ethic with an understanding of the law and new technologies, Banister applied his skills to the export-import trade and privateering. Through his maritime activities and real estate development, he was a rainmaker for artisans, workers and producers, contributing to income opportunities for businesswomen and even slaves. Drawing on Banister's meticulously kept daybooks, ledgers, letters and receipts, this book provides an analysis of his contribution to the economic history of colonial America, highlighting the complexity of the commerce of the era.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
