Description

This book uncovers the many ways in which innovations and innovation system development policies have become crucial to development policy formation across Africa.

As new instruments, actors and tools emerge in development cooperation, the role of innovation in the societal development of developing countries needs to be addressed fully. This book delves into subjects as diverse as the changing development policies between the Global North and South, the role of innovation in international aid and development policies, the role of public, private and non-governmental sectors, universities and other development actors, and the potential for inclusive innovation in local communities. In particular, the book asks who benefits from innovation-focussed development policies, and if and how practical innovation instruments include the global poor.

Written in an accessible and engaging style, the book includes a range of discussion questions and further reading suggestions to suit a range of readers, from students right through to policy makers and practitioners, or anyone else looking for an introduction to innovation policies and development in Africa.

Reviews

"The authors offer profound and thought-provoking advice to those searching for solutions to integrate innovation in their international development assistance programmes and how to navigate the pitfalls to achieve success. It is a must read for innovation for development enthusiasts and pessimists alike!" - Dr. Victor Konde, Officer in Charge, Green Economy, Innovation and Technology, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)

"I would like to thank the authors for this clearly written and easy to read book on innovation for development in Africa. Your book provide essential and current information on innovation and innovation systems that generates economic and social transformation in Africa. This is a must read book for development practitioners, policy makers, academics and students." - Dr. Rosemond Boohene, Associate Professor of Enterprise Development, University of Cape Coast, Ghana

"As the authors indicate, Africa cannot rely on technology transfer from highly industrialized countries to reach a sustainable and human development. However, Africa indeed needs science, technology and innovation, but inclusively oriented, where local stakeholders are involved, and supported by strengthened research at universities. On this line, the book suggests a promising way forwards for this great continent." - Dr. Judith Sutz, Professor of Science, Technology and Society, Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay

"I found the new book on Innovation for Development in Africa powerful and inspiring bringing to the front so many insightful and creative innovative contributions. This book is critical, reflective, analytical and creative with much original knowledge that can bring so much policy learning to make sure the reform, transformation and performance of the African developmental journey will fully succeed."-Dr. Mammo Muchie, DST/NRF Research Professor, Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
