This book presents a global history of the First World War through Indian soldiers. The essays in the volume measure the reach and scale of their participation - from the Western Front in Europe to the East Africa campaign, from Mesopotamia to Northeast India. Based on archival sources from various colonial record rooms and non-archival sources such as soldiers' autobiographies, popular folksongs of the time, soldiers' letters written from the warzones to their families in India (uncensored letters), petitions of soldiers, the volume provides an alternative history of the Indian's participation in the war. It objectively assesses Indian presence in the war from different perspectives: Indian, British, American, French, Australian, and others to bring to light hitherto unexplored facets of the war. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of military history, social and cultural history, and South Asian studies.
