One favorite block, sixteen projects based on it in a marriage of traditional and modern styles. This book is also dedicated to summer and all the projects (bar one Christmas variation) reflect the author's love of long lazy days, flowers and sunlight.

There are some lovely quilts and pillows in this colorful book, inspired by things like cotton candy, flowers, lily pads on a pond, fuzzy caterpillars and leaves falling at the end of summer. Improvers and intermediate level quilters will find all the instructions and diagrams they need in here, complete with templates to cut out at the back and a list of what you need. There are several pages with staged photographs showing some of the skills you require and the whole book is very well laid out. By this I mean that the print is of a good size and there is space between each stage, often accompanied by diagrams. This gives the book an uncluttered look that makes the projects less daunting, especially as none of the steps are too involved so the work progresses in easy stages. Each project has a whole page photograph of the finished item shown in a sunlit location, details about its inspiration and a list of materials. Finished item size and block sizes are given along with a skill level (beginner, confident beginner and intermediate in progression). There are block diagrams in color and a page sized photograph of the finished item shown flat and in some cases photographic steps too. This is a great book for any quilter with a bit of basic experience who wants to make up an attractive project and learn more skills while they do it.

The Dresden plate is a traditional quilt block that has been embraced by modern quilters as a way to exhibit contemporary fabrics and geometric form. Designers Gallian and Jones drew inspiration from vintage quilts and from memories of their childhood summers for these designs, which spotlight the Dresden plate in myriad settings. Patterns include centipede, which cuts the Dresden plate in half, offsetting the sides to comprise three undulating waves of petals across a quilt top; garden party, which applies fussy cutting to create a kaleidoscope effect when the petals are assembled; heat wave, which features a large focal plate framed with two borders; and windswept, which places Dresden plates along a large white background, indulging modern quilters' love for negative space in their quilts. Since Dresden plates involve curves and applique, many beginners are intimidated, but an overview of piecing and finishing Dresden plate blocks yields a helpful guide. Cutting charts and traceable templates are provided. VERDICT The popularity of the Dresden plate with modern quilters makes this volume especially appealing, but quilters with traditional tastes will also delight in the bright, vibrant takes on this tried-and-true block.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
