Description
This book presents an in-depth treatment on the foundation, experimentation, and applications of digital twins (DTs). DTs are virtual representations of physical objects for the purpose of optimizing design, development, use, maintenance, and retirement of said products and systems. The idea of DTs is the logical extension of the use of physical twins throughout human history and moving that use into the digital/virtual realm. The first DT model was first formally introduced in the early 2000s. It is only with the explosive growth of digital computing and communications capability in the last decade that DTs are becoming an increasingly viable tool to represent highly complex objects with a high degree of resolution and fidelity.
Modeling & Simulation (M&S) are the underlying capabilities that enable physical world objects to be moved in virtual space. With the versatility of being applied to a wide array of industries and sectors, DTs using M&S are most useful in deriving insightful information about a physical object without expending material resources. It can perform descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics. DTs using M&S can be applied in all four phases of the physical object’s lifecycle: create, build, operate/sustain, and dispose.
