Description

Creative re-use is more than conversion or rehabilitation of a property for new, or continued, use. The two volumes of this book offer numerous illustrated examples of the innovative work by a range of architects in addition to key projects from Derek Latham's own practice. Volume 1 focuses on the challenge of identifying a suitable building, understanding its essential qualities, and selecting an option appropriate for both its setting and the people who will use it. It discusses the choice between design intervention, repair and replication, and when to use new techniques or traditional skills. Additional guidance is provided through a wide range of example, notes, such as survey tips, and case studies. Volume 2 offers an extensive collection of illustrated examples from different parts of the UK showing buildings of every shape, size and type. Each building type is examined separately: country houses, hospitals, industrial buildings, offices, railway stations, farms with outbuildings, churches, schools and many others. It then describes the range of potential re-uses that might be considered, taking account of their size and suitability for the relevant function. This book will be of interest to all those involved in the debate about our future built environment particularly architects, surveyors, planners, developers and conservation professionals.

Reviews
These books are very impressive and packed with all manner of drawings, photographs and visual material. Derek Latham, an experienced architect, has collected together a huge number of case studies and examples of his own and other architects' work, which Donhead has presented in a highly 'visual' way. With its wealth of ideas and past precedents, this is just what architects and designers need for inspiration. The Architects Journal I welcome Derek Latham's new book, Creative Re-use of Buildings, as a thoroughly comprehensive appraisal of the art of re-using, not only redundant buildings, but also buildings of all types, large and small, that need to change their use in order to maintain their economic health and continue to contribute to their community. ... A plethora of examples, case studies and cross references in the second volume, clearly demonstrate that no building type is beyond economic re-use. This book should be on the curriculum for all aspiring architects and planner and surveyors. Civic Trust These must surely be the most detailed, well illustrated and thoroughly persuasive examination of the case for re-use of old buildings. Mr Latham's detailed case studies should inspire those who are uncertain of possible re-use for historic buildings but could profitably be studied by almost anyone undertaking such increasingly frequent restoration work. The Scottish Civic Trust

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
