Description
Methodologically speaking, this book has used global vision, applying multiple-sites approach of fieldwork, investigating from the rural area of southeast China to the metropolises of the U.S. And the case of the old migrants group for comparison also had in-depth investigations covering South Fujian, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
This book responds to the two fundamental questions referring to the structure of Chinese communities overseas supposed by Lawrence W. Crissman’s in 1967. One, it is possible to describe urban Chinese society throughout Southeast Asia and in North America in terms of the same generalized model. Two, the social organization of the urban overseas Chinese did not originate abroad but rather is derived from patterns indigenous to China itself.
