This book discovers everyday forms of conviviality that imagine and construct wider worlds of possibility in fiction and life narratives from Indian Ocean Africa. It focuses on those ordinary moments of recognition, of playfulness, of hospitality, humour and kindness in everyday life which play a fundamental role in resisting racism and other forms of oppression. Covering a range of Southern and Eastern African literary texts/memoirs, the book highlights acts of embodied, ordinary, and often spontaneous, moments of human interconnection, while not flinching from the reality of the suffering caused by Apartheid, colonial oppression, racism and xenophobia. Further, it engages with current research on conviviality and puts it in conversation with African perspectives on relation, extending existing scholarly debates from the vantage point of the Global South.
