About the Author
Michael Hamburger was born in Berlin in 1924 and moved to Britain in 1933. He is the foremost translator of German poetry into English (among the many authors he has translated from are Holderlin, Celan, Rilke and Goethe) and one of the most highly regarded English poets of our age. In 1992 he received the Order of the British Empire from the Queen. Among his many awards are the Goethe Medal of the German Federal Republic (for services to German literature) and the European Community's first ever European Translation Prize.
Reviews
"It takes a rare poetic intelligence to achieve a scaling-down of subject matter without any loss of authority or seriousness, and this Hamburger abundantly possesses" - TLS "Few English poets of our day can have come to their craft with the cultural and linguistic richness of Michael Hamburger" - Agenda"
