Description

This fascinating book of over 200 old photographs depicts people, scenes and events from everyday life in the villages of Countesthorpe, Willoughby, Waterleys, Peatling Magna, Foston, Kilby, Newton Harcourt and Wistow. It illustrates the changing face of these villages during the past 100 years with the use of many photographs that have never been published before. Countesthorpe was an open village with no principal landowner. Non-conformity had a particular influence on its residents and the images of the village reflect this diversity. Local personalities and customs are featured, together with scenes of argricultural life, developing modes of transport, the unique Cottage Homes and elements of both World Wars. By contract the closed villages of Willoughby, Peatling Magna, Kilby and Newton Harcourt were dominated by one of more large landowners. Scenes of Willoughby feature its early brick buildings. Photographs of Newton Harcourt are linked to the Goddard family, as well known architects. Tranquil views of Kilby create feelings of nostalgia, as do the traditional sights of Peatling Magna's village life. Foston and Wistow were depopulated for sheep grazing and consequently became deserted. Wistow Hall, however, remains famous for its connections wit Charles I and the Battle of Naseby. This captivating collection of images will provoke memories of local history and inspire a new generation to be interested in their past.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
