Water, as a fundamental element, is crucial for the sustenance of life on earth. As a vital natural resource, it supports environmental ecosystems in India, ranging from freshwater to marine systems. Examples of water quality modeling studies conducted in India include the Tehri reservoir, Chilka lake, Oatcake in Kashmir, Kodaikanal lake, Ooty lake in Tamil Nadu, rivers such as the Ganges, Narmada, and Kaveri, as well as coastal regions like the Hoogly estuary, Paradip, Vishakhapatnam, Kakinada, Chennai, Mangalore, Konkan, and Gujarat coast. Water quality modeling is critical for understanding the complex interactions among temperature, biological oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and eutrophication in both freshwater and marine environments. Numerical models must be calibrated and properly applied to improve our understanding of these interactions and support effective water quality management.
