What a treat! This is an eye-catching collection of maps of Wales and its counties, complete with illustrations and interesting snippets which is sure to fly off the shelves. Children aged six and above will love it, but so will older youngsters and adults interested in historical and contemporary Wales who wish to be entertained as well as being informed. The publishers have not skimped on scale or quality of production so that a copy should be robust enough to stand enthusiastic use over time, despite the fact that some content will inevitably become dated. The bold, colourful and attractive cover has iconic Welsh imagery of myths and legends, industry, nature, history and culture and provides a snapshot of the authors' vision of Wales through an intriguing selection of both the expected and more quirky. There is something for everyone here: a striking and easy-to-use contents page, the lyrics of 'Hen Wlad fy Nhadau' and 'Land of my Fathers', county and electoral borough maps from north to south and supplementary factual sections which combine clear graphics with facts and figures. There are double page spreads with a focus on Folklore and Traditions, The Arts, Sports and Nature, Food and Caring for Our Country. The clean design and attention to detail ensures readabilitym and the overall effect is not too busy. Readers will enjoy using Wales on the Map in a variety of ways - formally or informally - for fun and for enjoyable learning as they dip into it at random. They can study the informative sections and focus on an area they are familiar with or on places beyond their experience. In the classroom or on an individual basis there is ample scope to consider the chosen content and to supplement each element of the book with local knowledge, maybe to add more Welsh personalities, sports people, artists and authors. Even those who think they know Wales inside out will enjoy a copy and are likely to be surprised and delighted. In creating Wales on the Map writer Elin Meek, artist Valeriane Leblond and designer Tanwen Haf have created a book which will find a place in homes, schools and libraries all over Wales, whilst also providing attractively presented information for visitors, tourists and holidaymakers. It would be an ideal gift or souvenir. Two companion stand-alone volumes to be enjoyed individually or with this pictorial atlas book are also available - there's a Quiz Book by Elin Meek, illustrated by Valeriane Leblond and designed by Tanwen Haf, and an Activity Book by Tanwen Haf, with many drawings based on Valeriane Leblond's illustrations, both published by Rily, 2018. -- Lorna Herbert-Egan @ www.gwales.com
