About the Author
Helen Constantine taught languages in schools until 2000, when she became a full-time translator. She has published two volumes of translated stories, Paris Tales and French Tales, and is currently editing a series of City Tales for Oxford University Press. She has translated Mademoiselle de Maupin by Theophile Gautier and Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos for Penguin. She is married to the writer David Constantine. Deborah Holmes studied German and Italian in Oxford, Pavia and Salzburg, graduating from Oxford in 2001 with a DPhil on the Italian antifascist exile author Ignazio Silone. She subsequently held post-doctoral positions in Oxford, Munich and Vienna. Her recent research focuses on late nineteenth and early twentieth century Austrian literature, and she has also published a biography of the philanthropist, pedagogue and journalist Eugenie Schwarzwald (Langeweile ist Gift, Residenz 2012). Deborah Holmes is currently Senior Lecturer in German at the University of Kent, where she teaches courses in modern literature, culture and translation.
