A great urgent care book
'This book is a great example of combination of subject theory and vast urgent care practical clinical experience of author behind it. This book deals with almost every clinical situation encountered in urgent care centres. It is very concise, comprehensive and very quick to get to the main issue in one place. Excellent resource for those working in Urgent Care settings
'This is an excellent, concise book written by a practising GP. Lightweight and fits easily in a medical bag. It covers the vast majority of acute conditions that can commonly present in urgent care and out of hours, providing a good reference guide for assessment, treatment and management of patients, when faced with limited diagnostic options, which is usually the case in Urgent Care and Out of hours settings.
Sections include clearly highlighted Red Flag symptoms to watch out for, as well as advice on when to refer to hospital, when to refer more urgently and which departments to refer to. Also a very useful, clear, quick reference guide for palliative care patients, which one can often encounter in out of hours medicine, with useful prescribing options and guidance regarding use of syringe drivers which can be an area of difficulty for those lacking experience.
Each Chapter also begins with an inspirational famous quote which is a nice touch from the author. Overall, I would recommend this book as a useful resource for anyone working in primary care particularly GPs, those in GP or medical training, or anyone working in urgent care settings, looking for a quick reference guide to aid them whilst managing patients on the front line.' THE BEST handbook for new UCPs/ACPs
'Having spent hundreds of pounds on books recently to support my move into face to face, Out of Hours care as an Urgent Care Practitioner (I'm a trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner). I found most books missed the mark and didn't give me the concise or relevant information I needed. This is not a detailed or in depth learning book, so make sure you have your basic consultation and assessment skills. However, it acts as a fantastic, small, handy, quick reference guide. Firstly, I identify the probable diagnosis, find the relevant chapter and then I check the presentation detail matches the symptoms of the patient. Then I follow the management plan. It even gives medication ideas, even though you need to follow your local policy. It also points out red flag symptoms and highlights when a patient ought to be referred to another service.
