Description

Incorporate the music of our global community into your classroom with Travel On and On: Interdisciplinary Lessons on the Music of World Cultures. With both traditional and newly composed music and material from other content areas, each ready-to-use lesson plan has an interdisciplinary approach to teaching multicultural music. Intended for use in general music classrooms, the lessons encourage collaboration with teachers of other subjects but can also effectively be taught solely by music teachers. Based on the National Standards for music and other subject areas and intended for grades 4-8, each lesson can be adapted for younger or older students with suggested extensions and materials. Bring the music of Latin America, Africa, and the United States into your classroom, with special emphasis on Native Americans, African Americans, and Cajuns. Most lessons also incorporate Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy, with written ostinati for multiple Orff instruments.

About the Author
Elisa Macedo Dekaney is associate professor of music education in the School of Educations and in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. She is an active researcher, clinician, and choral conductor in the United States and abroad. Deborah Cunningham is a choral and general music educator at Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School in Jamesville NY and associate director of the Syracuse Children's Chorus. She is active as a workshop presenter and guest conductor throughout the United States and is past-president of the Greater Rochester American Orff Schulwerk Association.

Reviews
This is a fabulous resource for integrating the arts with other subjects in an authentic context. The authors have researched appropriate instrumentation, rhythms, and culture-specific language to bring these lessons flavor. For teachers who are struggling with the final two national standards, and especially attempting to teach them in an honest way, this book is a 'must have' for your library! Not only are the lessons easy to implement in that they provide a sequential approach that can be used across multiple lessons, they are also self-explanatory and do not require that the teacher do outside research. The Orff arrangement in the Latin/African American chapter is very accessible and includes easy ostinato patterns that build on each other. Another wonderful aspect of this book is that, when given directives to collaborate in a schoolwide cross-curricular endeavor, these lessons are ready made. You will save your social studies and language arts teachers lots of work! -- Jessica Napoles, assistant professor of choral music education at the University of Utah
Writing on the style and interpretation of folk music has always been a very difficult task. Authors tend to either treat the subject with an over-generalizedapproach or present it in such detail that the text ends up relating only to a very small circle of connoisseurs. In the this book, Dekaney and Cunningham find just the right balance to address some of Brazilian indigenous music styles. They provide readers with correct Portuguese pronunciation as well as beautiful and accurate illustrations. Most important, they inspire teachers to pursue a deeper understanding of Brazilian culture, instead of simply showing 'how to' perform this repertory. -- Eduardo Lakschevitz, professor of music history at the Universidade do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), Brazil

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
