About the Author
Frederick R. Chromey is Professor of Astronomy and the Matthew Vassar, Jr Chair at Vassar College, New York, and Director of the Vassar College Observatory. He has almost 40 years' experience in observational astronomy research in the optical, radio, and near infrared on stars, gaseous nebulae and galaxies, and has taught astronomy to undergraduates at Brooklyn College, City University of New York and Vassar College.

The author has sixteen years' experience of teaching and this is clearly reflected in the presentation. The book is plentifully illustrated in black and white, and each chapter is followed by a summary and exercises for the student. ... It can be recommended for its lucid style; occasionally the author betrays a wry sense of humour, such as the illustration of Fermat's principle in the way that Tarzan rescues Jane from crocodile-infested waters.
