Description

The cycling of elements such as carbon and nitrogen is of central importance in ecology, particularly when humans are causing changes to element cycles on a global scale. In this 1996 book a rigorous mathematical framework is developed to model how element cycles operate and interact in plants and soils, forming the foundations of a new ecosystem theory. From a few basic equations, powerful predictions can be generated covering a wide range of ecological phenomena related to element cycling. These predictions are tested extensively against field and laboratory studies of agricultural and forest ecosystems. This work will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in theoretical ecology, soil science, forestry and biogeochemistry.

A rigorous mathematical framework for analysing ecosystems using element cycles; advanced 1996 text aimed at graduate ecologists.
Reviews
'[the] writing combines brilliant clarity and brevity with profound depth. The book is so well written that those familiar with these tools will learn not only an approach to problems that is marvellous for its clarity, but also some interesting mathematics along the way.' Full treatments of many of the problems would make excellent thesis topics for students interested in pursuing ecosystem theory.' John Pastor, Bioscience
'I recommend this book to all scientists involved in ecosystem modeling.' The Quarterly Review of Biology
'[the] writing combines brilliant clarity and brevity with profound depth.' John Pastor, BioScience
'In general terms, the book deserves praise for its novel perspective. First published in 1996, its message is still fresh.' James W. McClelland, Ecology
'The book will serve as an excellent introduction to ecosystem ecology for those with a mathematical or physics background wishing to work in biological sciences. Ecologists wishing to develop their own modelling skills or to improve their understanding of existing models will also benefit from reading this book.' Michael F. Proe, Forestry
'... recommended for both beginners and experienced researchers.' A. D. Pokarzhevskii, Theoretical Ecosystem Ecology

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
