Description

This richly illustrated history explores the many challenges and triumphs faced by one of Britain's most fascinating cities. The Story of Bath charts the long history of this important city from its beginnings in the Roman period through to the present day. Its lively narrative takes in Bath's medieval reinvention as a health resort and focuses on its Georgian heyday, when a new classical town was achieved as the elegant backdrop to the social round of polite society. The rediscovery of the Roman Baths and growing industries led to Bath's expansion in the late nineteenth century, while the Blitz and the consequent conservation battles of the Sack of Bath are highlighted in the twentieth century. Accompanied by evocative archival images, Cathryn Spence brings to life the many facets of this remarkable World Heritage Site.

About the Author

Dr Cathryn Spence is a museum professional, lecturer and historic gardens consultant. She is currently researching the eighteenth-century artist Thomas Robins, in preparation for a substantial monograph on the painter and his patrons to be published in 2018. She is the Curator of Archives at the American Museum in Britain and was previously Director of the Building of Bath Museum, now the Museum of Bath Architecture. She has also worked at the National Portrait Gallery and the V&A Museum. In addition to her work as a consultant, Cathryn is also an independent researcher, her specialism being the architectural, cultural and social history of Georgian Britain. She wrote a regular monthly column for several years for The Bath Magazine; much of the research undertaken for those articles served as the basis for the four books she has published with The History Press.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
