Description

Scattered throughout Western Europe are the enigmatic monumental remains of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The most famous of these is undoubtedly Stonehenge in the south of England, however, thousands of burial cairns, stone circles, standing stones and rock carvings are found in other parts of the British Isles. For the past 30 years I have been surveying these monuments in Scotland to try and understand what their solar and lunar orientations might have meant in the beliefs of our ancient ancestors.

About the Author

STUART McHARDY is a writer, historical scholar, poet, musician, folklorist and renowned lecturer about Scottish history and culture, at home as well as abroad. His unique understanding of tradition comes from a thorough immersion in the storytelling arts and history alike. Former President of the Pictish Arts Society and the Director of the Scots Language Resource Centre, McHardy has occupied lead positions with organisations working towards the aim of rediscovering Scottish national identity.

DOUGLAS SCOTT is a pioneering archaeo-astronomer and independent scholar. His work has meticulously re-examined the positioning of ancient sites in Scotland, and their relationship to the solar and lunar cycles. This has opened up fresh understandings and interpretations of ancient monuments, and new respect for the intelligence of our ancestors.

Reviews

McHardy succeeds in demonstrating that our living culture in Scotland is older and more complex than we previously realised. DONALD SMITH on The Nine Maidens by Stuart McHardy

Written and arranged in a way that is both accessible and scholarly, this is an excellent addition to the growing body of work on the Picts. THE COURIER on A New History of the Picts by Stuart McHardy

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
