About the Author
MICHAEL F. MCCARTHY, DMD, received his orthodontic training while serving in the military. During his ten years in the US Army, Dr. McCarthy rose to the rank of Major and served as a Green Beret. He is a board-certified orthodontist with over twenty-five years of experience and has been recognized as one of America's Top Dentist by the Consumer Research Council of America every year for the past decade. ERIKA HARTMAN, DDS, was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society while at Meharry Medical College and received several honors there, including the Academy of Operative Dentistry student award and the American Association of Orthodontists student award. She received the Faculty Award in Orthodontics while at Howard University for having the highest academic average in her post-graduate orthodontic class. In 2017, Dr. Hartman was recognized as one of America's Top Dentist by th Consumer Research Council of America. She is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists. CAREYBETH RIVERS, DMD, MS, is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, and finished second in her class at The University of Alabama, Birmingham, where she received honors such as Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the Leon H. Schneyer award, and the Hinman Scholar award. Upon graduation, she completed an advanced education in general dentistry at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Birmingham where she treated some of the most complex dental cases. She remains active in her church and community, and currently serves on the Make-A-Wish Advisory Council.
