Description
The Politics of Race is an excellent resource for students and general readers seeking to learn about race policies and legislation. Arguing that 'states make race,' it provides a unique comparison of the development and construction of race in three white settler societies - Canada, the United States, and Australia.
This timely new edition focuses on the politics of race after 9/11 and Barack Obama's election as president of the United States. Jill Vickers and Annette Isaac explore how state-sanctioned race discrimination has intensified in the wake of heightened security. It also explains the new race formation of Islamophobia in all three countries, and the shifts in how Hispanics and Asian Americans are being treated in the United States. As race and politics become increasingly intertwined in both academic and popular discourse, The Politics of Race aids readers in evaluating different approaches for promoting racial justice and transforming states.
'Holding tremendous value for both the classroom and research, The Politics of Race is a solid model of comparative work. Jill Vickers and Annette Isaac do an excellent job providing a historical institutional analysis of race politics across three states and considering possible changes from above and below. Clearly written and presented, with terms well defined in both the text and glossary, Politics of Race is an important and valuable intervention into the political science literature.' -- Yasmeen Abu-Laban, Professor and Associate Chair (Research), Department of Political Science, University of Alberta 'A clearly laid out and very instructive book, The Politics of Race is an important contribution to the comparative study of race in the social sciences. Through noteworthy new ideas and useful concepts, Jill Vickers and Annette Isaac make an excellent case for why issues of race cannot be ignored by political scientists.' -- Henry Codjoe, Department of Social Sciences and School of Education, Dalton State College, Dalton State College
