Description
for SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied Commissioned by King's College, Cambridge for the 2015 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, The Flight sets a newly written poem by George Szirtes on the subject of the flight to Bethlehem. The harmonies are rich and ethereal, and a peaceful refrain implores 'May those who travel Find shelter on the flight: May Bethlehem Give rest to them.'
About the Author
Richard Causton was born in London and studied at the University of York, the Royal College of Music and the Scuola Civica in Milan. He has worked with world renowned performers such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrucken, London Sinfonietta, and the Nash Ensemble. He has been the recipient of several awards, including First Prize in the International Nuove Sincronie competition, the Mendelssohn Scholarship and a 2004 British Composer Award in the Best Instrumental Work category for Seven States of Rain. He was founder of the Royal College of Music Gamelan Programme and held the Fellow Commonership in the Creative Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge.

The joker in the pack a for those wanting something more novel and challenging this year a is Richard Causton's The Flight . . . As the composer explains, the work 'intersperses a series of animated canons of increasing complexity with a gentle refrain of a different and profoundly calm, expressive colour . . . In addition to all this, Causton deploys the stringent effect of sliding cries in the top vocal line during the canons, emphasising the true drama of the act of fleeing, with an added high version of the cries indicated as being optional . . . I look forward to hearing the piece performed in both manners, but have little doubt that the obligatory cries alone would still produce a very dramatic and satisfactory result for those preferring not to include the sfff top Bs. * Geoffrey Webber, Choir & Organ, Sept 2016 *
