This is the first book to analyse Spanish and Spanish American literature in the light of modern theories of sexuality. Its aim is twofold: to provide a readable introduction to the varied and complex treatments of sexuality since Freud; and to read, in this context, a representative selection of major texts from different areas of Hispanic studies - Renaissance, modern peninsular, and Spanish American. The writers discussed include Fuentes, Neruda, Lorca, and Galdos.

Smith is the author of Writing in the Margin (Clarendon Press 1988) and Representing the Other (Clarendon Press 1992). The hardback edition of The Body Hispanic was published in 1989.
