Description

From David Lean's big screen Great Expectations to Alejandro Amenabar's reinvention of The Turn of the Screw as The Others, adaptations of literary classics are a constant feature of popular culture today. The Bloomsbury Introduction to Adaptation Studies helps students master the history, theory and practice of analysing literary adaptations. Following an introductory overview of major debates and concepts, each chapter focuses on a canonical text and features: - Case study readings of adaptations in a variety of media, from film to opera, televised drama to animated comedy show, YA fiction to novel/graphic novel. - Coverage of popular appropriations and re-imaginings of the text. - Discussion questions and creative exercises throughout to guide students through their own analyses. - Annotated guides to further reading and viewing plus online resources. - The book also includes chapter overviews and a glossary of critical terms to give students quick access to key information for further study, reference and revision. The Bloomsbury Introduction to Adaptation Studies covers adaptations of: Jane Eyre; Great Expectations; The Turn of the Screw; The Great Gatsby.

Guiding students through their analyses of key canonical texts, this is a comprehensive and practical introduction to the theory and practice of adaptation studies.

Reviews
Written in clear, accessible style with plenty of exercises for learners and educators to try out, Yvonne Griggs's book achieves a notable feat of combining theoretical rigour with an awareness of pedagogic possibilities ... Perhaps the best entry to date in Bloomsbury's series of books on adaptation studies, the Introduction to Adaptation Studies deserves to be adopted as an essential course text for any institution. * Journal of Adaptation in Film & Performance *
An accessible book that functions as a useful resource for classroom engagement, weaving theory, and pedagogic practice as each chapter finishes with a series of exercises that brings critical aspects of adaptation studies to the forefront. * English *
Griggs' textual readings are of exemplary quality and clarity throughout, easily followable even for readers unfamiliar with the texts under discussion ... The exercises are the most original and useful parts of the book ... A necessary addition to any library of texts on adaptation ... due to the ways in which it encourages readers to become active analysers and adapters of texts themselves. * Adaptation *
I was very impressed by the book - an excellent introduction to adaptation studies for undergraduate students. * Professor Deborah Wynne, University of Chester, UK *
A very useful and original introduction to the practice and theory of adaptation. I personally found the introduction and concluding exercises to be really inspiring when it came to the teaching of adaptations of Shakespeare. * Matthew Woodcock, University of East Anglia, UK *
This will be an excellent resource for a number of students who are looking at adaptation in illustration. * Jason Hirons, Plymouth College of Art, UK *

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
