Description

From the Callanish stones and the great ritual monuments of the Neolithic, the broch towers and the wheelhouses of the Iron Age, through to the arrival of the Norse and the Lords of the Isles, this book explores the history of human settlement and society from the first hunter-gatherers to the Clearances. What emerges is a Hebridean archaeology as distinctive as those of Orkney and Wessex.

Armit is always clear and incisive ! he gives to the archaeology and history of Skye and the Western Isles a thoughtfulness and intellect that enhances our understanding of them. -- Mary Beith Armit presents a fascinating story of a rich archaeological heritage from Mesolithic hunter-gatherers to medieval Lord of the Isles. We find example after example of the kinds of sites that most archaeologists would give their eye-teeth to find. -- Dr Mike Park Essential for anybody living in or near, or regularly visiting, the area; but it is also recommended prior reading for anyone 'taking in the sites' for the first time. The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
