Description

This title is winner of Violet Crown Award, Writers League of Texas, 2008. For more than a decade, Marcia Kaylakie traveled Texas from the Panhandle to Big Bend country, from the Piney Woods to the Gulf, discovering thousands of quilts in towns from Alpine to Austin, Dimmitt to Dallas, and myriad other Texas communities large and small. Hidden away in closets, trunks, and attics, the quilts Kaylakie found are not only heirlooms but also, owing to their histories, irreplaceable emblems of Texas heritage. This book showcases thirty-four quilts. Through them and their stories, the cultural development of the state unfolds. Most will never be exhibited or appear in any other permanent record. All Texas-made, they span the state geographically and range from the 1870s to the turn of the twenty-first century. As examples of what Texas quilting was and is as craft - and as cultural narrative - these quilts preserve a unique and compelling aspect of Texas history.
Reviews
Kaylakie has crafted a remarkably fine read, revealing privately held quilts that are touchstones ... She knows quilts with both (gloved!) hands, sharing their stories deftly.--Xenia E. Cord, President American Quilt Study Group ""The stories of these quilts are trapunto-puffed, fat and rounded, stuffed with the stuff of real people.""--Joyce Gibson Roach, fellow, Texas Folklore Society and Texas State Historical Association ""[Texas Quilts and Quilters] is a visual delight that adds to the body of work on Texas quilts and quiltmakers... Jim Lincoln's photographs of the quilts, both overall views and clear details, are outstanding... Overall, the chosen quilts reflect the challenges and joys of life in the Great Plains... Kaylakie's choices can inspire other to look in-depth at how the sense of place influences both process and product."" -- Virginia Gunn, Great Plains Quarterly, Fall 2008 ""The stories included with each quilt make this book very special indeed...Marcia Kaylakie's stories tell of special quilts owned by people who love them and the stories their quilts tell."" --Mary Lou Midkiff, The Permian Historical Annual, Vol. 48, 2008

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
