Description

Languages are now a more important part of primary education than ever before, and all successful primary teachers need to understand the principles that support good language teaching and learning.

This second edition provides a coherent overview of teaching and learning languages, combining practical strategies for use in the classroom with engaging coverage of how to teach, informed by academic research and theory.

Key features of this new edition:

  • Fully updated coverage of policy and curriculum developments, including the 2014 National Curriculum and the Teachers' Standards
  • A new chapter on curriculum, planning and assessment for KS2
  • Expanded coverage of the transition from primary to secondary school and the implications for teaching
  • More examples of creative teaching and learning throughout.

This is essential reading for all students studying primary languages on initial teacher education courses, including undergraduate (BEd, BA with QTS), postgraduate (PGCE, School Direct, SCITT), and also NQTs.

Reviews

This is a useful book for teachers and students alike. The extensive reference to good practice gives the reader opportunities to develop understanding and skills. There are ideas a-plenty to engage and excite children about learning languages. The de-construction of the CLIL approach gives primary teachers an insight of how to use a methodology which has hitherto been viewed as 'for experts only.' Particularly useful is the guidance on how to implement languages at KS1.

-- Sally Maynard

This very accessible text weaves theory and practice together well, offering readers opportunities to reflect on important key issues related to teaching and learning languages in the primary school context. It provides very useful guidance for students with only emerging knowledge and confidence in this area of the curriculum as well as offering chapters for more experienced practitioners.

-- Marnie Seymour

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
