Swindon's unusual history as a large industrial town in the heart of Wiltshire has defined its townscape for the last 200 years. The town is largely the creation of the nineteenth century, built around the Great Western Railway's Works, but it nonetheless has over 600 listed buildings, not to mention scheduled monuments and three registered parks and gardens. Rebuilt in the eighteenth century with a formal park, the Lydiard estate served as both an American army camp and prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. About the Author
Born and raised in Whitwell, Derbyshire, Angela Atkinson moved to Swindon in the 1990s and is now a Swindon enthusiast and 'born again Swindonian'. She worked at Swindon's Research Councils for a number of years. Following early retirement, she undertook voluntary work and gained a 1st Class Joint English Hons degree. She now runs a small business, AA Editorial Services, is a trustee of Swindon Civic Voice and runs her Swindon blog, Swindonian.me, a personal celebration of the town.
