Description
David Duff was Chairman of Hibernian at the most extraordinary time in the club's history. In 1990, Wallace Mercer, then Chairman of Hearts, pushed for a merger of the two clubs. It became abundantly clear that rather than Edinburgh United, these machinations would see Hearts flourish and Hibs destroyed. For long agonising weeks, the fate of one of Scotland's great footballing institutions hung in the balance. With internal shareholders wanting to sell out, the end seemed inevitable. But David Duff had other ideas.
With vast fan support, he led the charge against a takeover which would have meant the end of the club he loved. For the first time, he tells the inside story of the plot to destroy Hibernian and the real motivations of those behind it. Some of the best-known names in Scottish business and football share the stage - including Tom Farmer, amongst others - often in surprising roles.
It is a riveting tale of double-dealing, greed and betrayal. But the book is about much more than this. It's about the club and its players at the time, featuring never-before-told stories and anecdotes about legends such as John Collins and Andy Goram. It's about dicey European nights behind the Iron Curtain, knife-edge matches and a man who dreamt of taking Hibs to the summit of Scottish football only to see his footballing dreams and life ruined. But most of all, it's about the terrible danger when money and greed meet sport.
