Description

Still Standing is a celebration of the vanishing vernacular architecture of Dominica. These small wooden homes, ingeniously crafted and carefully adapted to their environment, have survived hurricanes and earthquakes; in contrast to many modern concrete buildings, they are 'still standing'. Even so, they are under threat from the forces of 'development'. The stories and images in this book provide powerful evidence for vernacular conservation that will inspire new respect for the island's history and culture.

About the Author
Born in England with roots in Dominica, Dr Adom Philogene Heron is lecturer in Anthropology at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His research and writing centres on the ethnography of Dominica and the wider Caribbean, with specific focus on fatherhood and family, the historic and cultural lives of hurricanes, Black and Indigenous ecologies, cosmologies and forms of post-plantation repair. Currently, Adom is project lead on Caribbean Cyclone Cartography, a three-year ESRC-funded project that maps the social histories and futures of hurricane recovery in Dominica, part of which is the book Still Standing: the Ti Kais of Dominica. Born and raised in Dominica, Marica Honychurch moved to the US as a teenager and gained a BFA at the University of Colorado before studying in commercial photography in Massachusetts. She is a freelance documentary, travel and conceptual portrait photographer and her work has featured in international magazines. She lives in Dominica. This is her first book.

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
