Description
'Neil Thompson's excellent book emphatically convinces the reader that social problems are not normal features of society but are the result of hierarchy, inequality, and oppression in those societies. Its thematic approach, which addresses very current issues, will appeal to students from a wide range of disciplines, including social policy, criminology, poverty studies, housing studies, substance abuse and equality studies. It is a major contribution to literature on social problems and social justice; he excavates the meaning of social justice and social problems, offering important insights into very important concepts and the relationships between them.' - Professor Patricia Kennedy, Associate Professor of Social Policy, University of Wollongong, Australia 'A brilliant book beautifully written in an extremely accessible style and underpinned by a delicate blend of critical analysis and clear thoughtful discussion. An impressive range of problems are explored from mainstream child abuse to the threat of contemporary terrorism. The result is a brave, creative, level-headed but thought-provoking account, well supported by a number of key sociological texts. A must read for social science students, welfare practitioners and educators.' - Dr Paul Stepney, University of Tampere, Finland
