Description

Rebuilding Communities the Public Trust Way highlights cases of community foundation assistance to Community Development Corporations (CDCs) during the final two decades of the twentieth century in Cleveland, Ohio; Florida; and New Orleans, Louisiana. Author Jeffrey S. Lowe describes the influence of these three community foundations on CDC capacity to engage in activities that facilitate the revitalization of urban communities and provides recommendations for other community foundations and policymakers seeking to work with CDCs. This is an essential read for persons involved in the fields of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations and scholars of community development, urban history, and social policy.

About the Author
Jeffrey S. Lowe is assistant professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, College of Social Sciences, at Florida State University.

Reviews
I found this book to be quite informative...I cannot wait for a sequel... -- Cathy L. Martinez, 2008 * Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Voluntary Sector Quarterly *
The historic role and function of Community Development Corporations (CDCs) are well analyzed in Jeffrey Lowe's book Rebuilding Communities the Public Trust Way. He presents a sober analysis about their sustainability, dependent as they are on foundation support. A number of forces that seem to have strangled the viability and effectiveness of CDCs to being the mechanism through which low income community residents can voice and influence social and economic policies and programs are richly described and made understandable for the lay reader. . . . This book provides nuggets of insights that could frame a hopeful discussion among community development advocates and the philanthropic community that may lead to stronger partnerships against persistent poverty and marginalization. -- Ricardo Millet, The Woods Fund of Chicago

The shipping was just superior

The shipping was just superior; not even one of the books was in contact with the shipping box -anywhere-, not even a corner or the bottom, so all the books arrived in perfect condition. The international shipping took around 2 weeks, so pretty great too.
